DPF System

DPF Filters

How it Works a DPF Filter

A DPF filter is a device located in the exhaust system. It is designed for the purpose of removing solid particles generated by diesel engines, basically soot and benzopyrene. Last ones can cause cancer so It is necessary installing the DPF filter in order to satisfy the standard european emissions Euro V and Euro VI. Some automotive makers already install DPF filter in Euro IV cars.

The DPF filters consist on an metalic structure (honeycomb structure) with a ceramic compound inside. In that way it can accumulate the solid particles and let it go outside the clean air. Is is located close to the engine, near the catalyzer, sometimes are the same part, or after the collector as it is shown in the next picture.

DPF System

When the filter is blocked has to begin the incineration, the regeneration process. During the process the temperature inside the filter is beyond 600 ºC so the oxidation of the particles happens spontaneously in the presence of oxygen. Those temperatures are realized in two techniques:

  • The first technique is achieved by an additional dose of fuel. A post- combustion of soot is produced, in contact with hot exhaust gases, transforming it into CO2 , H2O and NOx .
  • The second technique consists of a catalytic additive injection which, mixed with the fuel , reduces the temperature needed to burn the particles trapped in the DPF . This technique is used by the group PSA HDI engines.

When regeneration occurs?

It occurs during driving, when the gases reach a temperature between 250 ºC and 500ºC in the filter. With a driving about 10 minutes at a speed of 100 km / h is sufficient for such regeneration happens. It occurs at regular intervals between 600 and 800 km, depending on the type of driving each vehicle.

This regular cleaning of the filter does not eliminate completely the particles. It is necessary changing the DPF filter between 80,000 and 120,000 kilometers, especially if short trips are made at low speed.
