Mineral water and mountain spring water require very careful treatment to preserve their original purity, according to FDA standards (Food and Drug Administration), to prevent any contamination during processing and packaging. Filtration plays a key role in this respect, so it is essential to use the right filters for each phase.

The filtration needs of a mineral water or mountain spring water bottling plant range from removing visible particles to controlling cryptosporidium (parasite) through very fine filtration. Sometimes it is also necessary to filter out a number of additives that have been used to alter the characteristics of the water and which must be removed once they have fulfilled their purpose.

Primary filtration will remove the visible particles and smaller particles that produce turbidity in the water, with filters with a micron size of around 50µ being used, while during secondary filtration pathogenic microorganisms that are harmful to health will be removed, such as cryptosporidium and giardia lamblia. During the fine filtration stage, any microorganisms that may have been added to the water during the normal treatment and bottling process are removed, thus ensuring the safety of the final product and giving it a suitable taste and appearance.
